Rom, gypsies and Român, Romanians, have lived together for centuries in uneasy symbiosis. The turbulent history of the Twentieth Century has left Romanian a less culturally diverse place than it had been when the century began. Hungarians, Jews and Germans have left in large numbers, but the land is still filled with cultural variety and nuance.
